The Urban Bird Project was invited to present for the UTSA Libraries Pizza + Research event on April 8th, 2025. Some of our Team shared general information about UBP, including its roots and how it all started. Each team member also presented on their individual research projects: Kenneth Walker (Co-Director) presented on the Avian Restor(y)ation Digital Repository and Storymaps, Amelia King-Kostelac (Co-Director) introduced the Arts-Based Window Collision Project, Mariel Ortega (Master’s Graduate Fellow) shared findings from her ongoing research around microplastics exposure in House Sparrows, Eres Gomez (Research Program Coordinator) spoke about Indigenous feather rights and access, and Olarotimi Ogungbemi (PhD Graduate Fellow) discussed the African Grey Parrot and environmental advocacy.
It was a successful turnout with over 75 people in attendance. The presentation concluded with an audience Q&A and some very engaging conversations centered on Birds and conservation, community engagement, environmental justice and advocacy, local birding spots, and regional controversial city projects affecting birds and their habitat.
Thank you to the UTSA Library for extending the invitation to UBP, especially Ammi Bui (UTSA Librarian) for leading the event and coordinating everything — we appreciate you! As well as all of the UTSA Library staff who helped run the event and video crew.
